Rare short tailed early example of the pattern adopted by the regiment in 1837. Scarlet melton cloth with dark blue facings to the collar and cuffs. The full square collar is edged with chequered silver lace with two row of scrolling to the centre. To the front of the coatee are two rows of eight silver domed buttons of regimental pattern bearing VR cypher to centre, sadly four of these buttons are now missing. The cuffs of the coatee are decorated with silver scrolling embroidery and regimental buttons. To the crown of the tails can be found the silver bullion waterfall flanked by regimental buttons. The interior is the original quilted cotton as when first issued, often these early tunics have been re-tailored. There are some surface moth traces but this is to be expected of tunics of this age. In total five buttons are missing from this tunic. Accompanying the coatee is the original pair of 1830 box pattern officers epaulettes. They are in silver bullion with regimental pattern silver crescent, which supports fine twist tassels. Both are complete with the regimental pattern button to the end. The underside with leather strap and padded velvet cushion. The silver bullion over the years has dulled and matches perfectly that of the coatee which would indicate that these are original to the coatee. Overall this is an interesting early British military coatee and is unusual to find this pattern. |
